Soap myths

-Solid soap dries out! - Bad soap cracks! - Soap in your hair? No, it doesn't work!

You've probably heard them before, common myths about soap. It's time to set the record straight, we ask our own Manufacturer and CEO how it actually works. Check it out here:

-Solid soap is unhygienic! Or is it?

No, nothing bad can grow on that soap. Especially when the pandemic started, there was also talk of research showing that solid soap is much more effective against viruses! And it was proven that we both wash better and get even cleaner by using solid soap. My theory is that it's the cuddliness of the lather that encourages more thorough washing. One thing to keep in mind is that the soap needs to be aired and dried between uses, my strongest recommendation is to use loofah cucumber soap dishes that absorb the water under the soap.

-Soap dries out the skin!

No really, quite the opposite. I always explain it like this, there is bad solid soap and bad liquid soap then on the other hand there is good solid soap and good liquid soap. The bad ones will certainly dry out your skin and the good ones won't. The world of soap is quite nuanced, you need to be able to understand the list of ingredients, or simply ask us, we know this. Good soap never washes away all the skin's own grease and also smears the skin. All craft soaps are over-greased and this is a big factor in making the soaps extra good. Another factor is that when you make soap, i.e. by our definition saponify oils, glycerine is formed in addition to the salt soap. Glycerine can bind moisture to itself and thus make the soap softer and kinder. Many people who have suffered for years from eczema and constantly dry skin are helped by something as simple as switching to good soap. Wonderful!

-Perfumed soap causes eczema

It is very rare to react with eczema to the fragrance itself. Of course, there is allergy and hypersensitivity to fragrance, but rarely does it have time to react to the skin in a so-called "rinse off" product, ie something you wash off the skin. If you suspect that it is a fragrance allergy, you should seek and get an investigation - Fragrance, both ethereal and synthetic, consists of many different fragrances and it is important to know exactly what makes your body react. But the more common is that you can't tolerate what the scent is in, ie the soap formula itself is too strong. I dare say that all synthetic degreasers are too cleansing and many are allergenic. So, if you suspect you are hypersensitive to fragrance, before you rule out fragrance, change the soap! Also want to mention that of course unscented soap is always an option and sometimes what I crave.

-Shampoo soap is different from ordinary soap!

No, anything called a shampoo soap is always a soap in our opinion, but of course adapted to suit hair washing. Some oils are more comfortable for washing your hair. For example, in my Fantastic which is greased with avocado oil, it is great for giving hair shine and moisture, as well as being wonderfully comfortable when washing the body. So if you've invested in a shampoo soap and a body soap, swap them once and see how it feels! I always try all the soaps for everything, and compare my belief after a glance at the content against how it actually turned out. There is also something called shampoo cake, not to be confused with shampoo soap, which is most often a synthetic surfactant in solid form, thus like a conventional shampoo in soap form.

-You can't use the same soap for your whole body!

As I mentioned above, it works just fine, and can be unexpectedly fun! A shampoo soap can be wonderful for your hands and body, and a body soap is great for your hair. With this in mind, my warmest advice is to really use your soap. Imagine how easy it is to use a single soap for your whole body! A tip here is both Aleppo soap and Marseilles soap.

-If a soap cracks, it is bad!

This doesn't have to be the case, although it can often be an indicator that the soap is of inferior quality and simply too greasy. But even really good soap sometimes cracks, and this depends partly on the oils it is made from, and how it is left in the bathroom. A good soap that is rarely used tends to crack because its natural glycerine absorbs water from below and dries at the same time on the top. Somewhere along the line, moisture must get in and the soap cracks on the top. Don't worry about using a cracked soap, just give it a little extra love and lather it up and maybe it will go back together.

Soap up, folks!

Ann's L'Erbolario tips

Lerbolario

Our colleague Ann has been guiding you through our
L´Erbolario range in the Haga store since 2016. That she is passionate about the northern Italian brand is no news, but what are her favorites? Read the interview below and get inspired!

What's so magical about L'Erbolario for those who haven't tried it before? The magic of L'Erbolario lies in the fact that this brand is like the colors of life packaged in the most exquisite boxes. The many scents are intoxicating and are highlighted in the fine perfumes and the incomparably good soaps. Natural beauty and ecolysis are both apt names to describe this brand. L'Erbolario is absolutely delightful and tops with its care for your skin and the environment.

Your first favorite perfume and current favorite perfume? My first favorite perfume is the Poppy perfume with its warm, luxurious and irresistible scent. The bottle is deep red with a luxurious gold cork and is a delight to puff with. My current favorite perfume is the Lilac perfume. It has grown on me like lilacs on a spring day. It is sweet and wonderfully floral and the bottle is so nice with its round shape and gold cork. The lilac perfume extends the lilacs' all too short life.

Which soap should you not miss from L´Erbolario? The brand offers three different shapes of soaps, and I'm particularly fond of lathering with the soaps that are shaped like a puck. That's why I recommend the puck-shaped soap Ebano with extracts of ebony and cedar. It has a deliciously masculine scent with citrus notes and is great to lather with.

How do you like the lather of L'Erbolario soaps? The lather is silky, soft and creamy. It's a joy to build up a good lather that gives care to my hands. The fact that the scent lingers on the skin is a great bonus.

Good soap + Water = Virus-free moisturized hands

Soaps and Tvagas soaps

There is nothing proven as effective as solid soap to repel viruses and bacteria.

Viruses can live outside the body for hours or even days and can easily stick to our skin and penetrate it or even more easily get in through mucous membranes. There's no cure for the virus once it's inside us, but with something as simple as soap, you can minimize the risk of the virus infecting you.

But why is soap and water such a good combination?

Yes, the cell membrane of viruses consists of a layer of fatty lipids. Soap dissolves fat and can thus destroy the virus cell and make it unviable. So washing often and thoroughly is the key to stopping infection. Solid soap is absolutely the best as it is usually more alkaline than liquid and both viruses and bacteria do not thrive in that environment. Then comes the important part of choosing a good soap. Bad soap, both solid and liquid, dries out your skin and damages the environment. Good soap moisturizes your skin and is not harmful to the environment. So for virus-free moisturized hands and body, - choose a natural soap with us!

How can you use Marseilles soap?

Marseille soap

You may be familiar with the classic French soap from Marseille? The real thing is cube-shaped, made from olive and coconut oil, and unscented. But how can you use it? Find out here!

For the whole body: it is very gentle and moisturizing. Unscented and suitable for all skin types, even sensitive.

For the dishes: Yes it's true! The soap is really good as a dishwasher detergent. Put the whole soap on the sink and sweep the dish brush over it. Or grate and dissolve in water (read more below) and store in a pump bottle.

Grate and make liquid soap: Marseilles soap is great for grating and lathering in water. Take your bottle and measure 1/3 with soap flakes, you easily grate with a regular grater. Fill with boiling water and shake a little. After a few hours, the soap is dissolved in water and ready to use. The areas of use will of course be the same as for the solid marzipan soap.
To think about: The soap now consists mostly of unpreserved water so make sure to use it all up within a month.

Wash clothes with: For hand washing: dissolve some of the soap in the water and then wash the garments. Rinse thoroughly.

In the machine: Grate the soap and put about 2msk straight into the drum when washing. If you wash at a low temperature, dissolve the soap in water first.

For the hair: As with all natural soaps, it is great to use the soap as shampoo soap. Wet your hair thoroughly and pass the soap over your hair or soldered in your hand and massage into your hair. Rinse. Great for those who have scalp problems.

More about Marseilles soap:

Many people are familiar with the city of Marseille and know that it is famous for its soaps. In fact, the soap industry started in the city in the south of France probably as early as 1100, probably because crusaders brought the knowledge of soap making from Aleppo. The production of Marseilles soap had its heyday between 1600-1750, and in 1688 a law was even passed governing who, how and in what way the popular soap could be produced. At this time, soap was used for the body but mostly for clothes as a detergent. The soap originally consisted of olive oil, soda ash and salt, all of which were available in France, which also helped business to flourish. The ingredients are boiled together, molded into blocks and, after drying, cut into the significant cube. The 72% stamp is a quality stamp that guarantees that the soap contains just 72% oil in the total composition. Nowadays, the soap is made from olive oil and coconut. Tip.

Ingredients: sodium olivate, aqua, sodium cocoate, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide.

Solid or liquid soap?

Aleppo soap

The solid soap is always right, good for the environment and trendy. The liquid soap, practical and supposedly more hygienic. But which one is really the best?

To sort it out, we first need to talk about soap in general whole. Anything that dissolves grease is chemically a surfactant, i.e. a soap. But we all know know that some detergents and soaps are bad for the environment and and dry out, so not all surfactants are good. So there are good soaps and bad soaps and in the same way there is good solid soap, bad solid soap - good liquid soap and bad liquid soap.

Good soap - in whatever form it comes. Is always made from oils that have been saponified into soap. Such soap, called natural soap, will never dry out or pollute the environment. Glycerine is naturally produced when making of good soap, the glycerine is present in the soap and acts as a moisturizer for the skin.

Bad soap - in whatever form it comes. Is a little more complex and can sometimes contain a certain amount of saponified oils but don't be be fooled. All the glycerine is often removed which directly makes the soap drying. Some inferior liquid soaps do not even contain oils in any form but only fat-dissolving lathering synthetic chemicals (e.g. SLS, SLES). These substances are extremely dehydrating and bad for our waters.

The first choice and most important is thus good or bad soap, then in which format is not as significant but there are of course differences worth mentioning.

Good solid soap - Purely artisanal, the genuine original soap. Better for the environment, you often save on plastic packaging and it's more economical. The feeling is also different with solid soap, the scent and lather come out in a different way.

Good liquid soap - Is like a solid soap but dissolved in water which means it needs to be preserved. Although many soap makers use a mild preservative, it is still an additive that is not needed in the solid soap.

The main thing is to choose a good soap! Then in which quickly becomes more a matter of taste. We only sell pure natural soaps and with us you can rest assured in whatever form the soap is good.
